A Not So Slight Detour

So I took a break from the book. Not a break from writing, mind you, but from the book. And now, I’m wondering when I’ll get back to it. Here’s what happened:

Someone that I know from Twitter and with whom I occasionally interact told me that they were going to be attending a screen writing class in Hollywood, specifically aimed at people interested in writing a television pilot. She suggested that it might be fun if I signed up too. I already followed the teacher, whom I’ll tell you a little more about later, on Twitter and knew a bit about his background as a veteran television writer, so I signed up.

Dorothy Parker, Give Me Strength

Dorothy Parker once said, “I hate writing, I love having written.”  I think about that quote often as I work on the book. Not because I hate writing. I wouldn’t be doing this if I did and I am also idealistic enough to believe that life is too short to waste it doing something that doesn’t make you happy, let alone doing something that you hate. No, I think about it because while I can imagine the end, the feelings of triumph and satisfaction and happiness that will come when I’m finally finished, I feel the wear and tear on my very soul from the process of getting there. This is hard.

So I’m Writing A Novel

Let me start by clarifying something: technically speaking, this isn’t the first novel I will have written. It’s the first one that I’m actually going to have edited and attempt to have published. Small distinction to you, maybe, but a big one for me.

Having said that, I have to tell you: it’s terrible. It being the manuscript so far. I’m not being modest, it’s an empirical fact. Why do I say that?
